"Khadaan" is a Bengali film released on December 20, 2024, that intertwines themes of friendship, ambition, and revenge against the backdrop of coal mining in the Damodar Valley.
Plot Summary:
1997: Shyam, after losing everything in Bangladesh, illegally migrates to India and starts working as a laborer in the coal mines of the Damodar Valley. There, he befriends Mohan, a Vaishnavite. Together, leveraging Shyam's strength and Mohan's intellect, they establish dominance over the coal industry. Their rise challenges local MLA Shehzad Siddique. Shyam becomes a hero to the impoverished laborers, predominantly from the local Adivasi community, by opposing the seizure of their agricultural lands and allocating them a 20% share in the coal mines. This brings him into contact with Mandi, an Adivasi leader. During a heated confrontation, Shyam kills a police officer, leading to his imprisonment, where he mysteriously dies, leaving behind his wife, Jamuna, and their newborn child.
2024: Mohan has transformed into a wealthy industrialist with a monopoly over the coal mines. He offers Shyam's son, Madhu, now a coal transporter, a position on his team. This decision displeases Mohan's son, Makhan, who expected to inherit his father's empire. As Madhu gains Mohan's trust, he uncovers the truth about his father's death and seeks vengeance for the injustices inflicted upon Shyam.
